Canada may reopen its borders for international students this fall!

Canada government is looking to ease its travel restrictions for international students in time for the commencement of the 2020 fall semester. Since March 2020, only students with a valid student visa permit were allowed to enter Canada. In a letter issued by the Minister of Immigration, Marco Mendicino, it was highlighted how important international students are to Canada’s learning environment, society and especially for the economy.

Discussion is currently being held with the federal government and the provincial governments to come up with a feasible solution to welcome international students once again while at the same time ensuring the safety guidelines and complying with the public health orders. One such rule is mandatory quarantine for the students for 14 days upon arrival in Canada.

Canada has introduced a temporary two-step study permit process in place, for the students who cannot yet submit a complete study permit application. This is for the students who want to commence their education program by Fall 2020. Once they submit their study permit, and the approval is granted, they are eligible to commence their education program online with the respected educational institution. Later, once international travel resumes, they can travel to Canada.

Online study is counted towards the Post- Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) eligibility.
